Materialen: de weefsels - Ginger and Sage

Materials: the fabrics

Last week we discussed a number of raw materials, which can be processed by weaving or knitting them, among other things. This creates a lot of beautiful variations. In this blog you can read about a number of these fabrics.

Tissues:

Fabrics are made by weaving yarns together in vertical and horizontal positions, these are the warp and weft yarns. The three main weaves are: plain weave, twill weave and satin weave.

Plain weave

The plain weave is a weave in its simplest form. Here, 1 warp yarn (vertical) is woven over 1 weft yarn (horizontal), this continues until the entire width of the fabric is finished and then the next rows until the length of the fabric is also finished. You often see this method in trousers, blazers, blouses and skirts. The photo below shows the plain weave in a number of colours.

Twill weave

The twill weave, like the plain weave, also has warp (vertical) yarns and weft (horizontal) yarns. Here, only 2/3 weft yarns are used per 1 warp yarn or 2/3 warp yarns per 1 weft yarn. This may sound a bit complicated, but we all know this weave! The twill weave is used for denims, for example, as can be seen in the image below and can be recognized by the diagonal stripes. This weave is mainly seen in sturdy fabrics for jeans or jackets.

Satin weave

In satin weave, just like in the aforementioned weaves, warp and weft yarns are also used. In satin weave, even 4/5/6 weft/warp yarns go over 1 warp/weft yarn. Due to this large overlap, a larger part of the yarn is exposed, which ensures a beautiful shine and luxurious appearance. This material is often used for blouses or dresses.

Of course, combinations of the above methods can also be made, a popular variant of this is the jacquard. A very beautiful luxurious material that is used for skirts, jackets but also often as furniture fabric.

These are the three most common weaves and are used in the hundreds of possible variations on the weaves that can be found. Look around you when shopping, hopefully you will recognize a few now. If you find this interesting, then definitely keep following the blog, some new posts will follow soon.
